How did having your first child inspire the name and mission of your mattress company?

When I opened the luxury side of my business, I wanted to give it a name that was unique and had meaning. The family and I consulted and decided that my daughter’s name—Hadley Olivia—was the perfect new name. We are family-owned and -operated, and she will possibly take over one day as the future CEO. When my wife Natalie and I found out we were having our little girl, we started shopping around for a crib mattress. I was very disappointed in some of the mattresses that were being sold in the furniture stores. After extensive research, I discovered that OMI and Hastens had natural crib mattresses that gave great support and had none of the carcinogens and chemicals that were present in the other mattresses.

What makes for a luxury mattress and how do the materials in your mattresses put it in the luxury category?

It is basically in the materials used to make the mattresses and the process used to put them together. The luxury beds contain materials such as cotton, wool, horsetail, mohair and latex. Some of these mattresses are meticulously built by hand. These are all natural materials, with no chemicals added. They give the bed its unique feel and comfort. Most North American beds have memory foam on the top layers of the mattress. Memory foam is not a natural material, it is man-made and has an off-gassing odor that contains carcinogens.

Describe the company’s approach to customer service and how it enhances the process of selecting the perfect mattress.

Our customers are the most important part of our business. We try to go above and beyond for our customers. We truly want them to be completely satisfied, which is why we offer our ‘90-day’ comfort exchange policy. We understand that it is difficult to choose a mattress in the short time you spend in our showroom. Sometimes, the perfect mattress is picked, and other times, once home, our customers decide the mattress is not comfortable. The most common mistake people make is picking a mattress that is too firm; once they get it home, they realize they actually need a softer mattress.

To get the best mattress, what are the key questions all consumers should ask during the selection process?

What type of support does the mattress have? For example, if the customer is a side sleeper, they will need to know if the mattress has a comfort layer that will make their hips and shoulders comfortable. Choosing a mattress is very selective. Everyone has different pressure points on their bodies, so one mattress does not fit all. You need to try a minimum of three to four different feels to determine the one that your body finds the most comfortable.

What accessories do you sell to complement your mattresses?

We carry a full line of mattress protectors, sheet sets, down comforters, down pillows and duvets.

What type of mattress do you own and why?

My wife and I sleep on a Hastens Mattress. This is a high-quality mattress, and I enjoy the comfort and luxurious feeling. I personally sleep on the mattresses that I sell so I can tell our customers about the feel of the mattress and what I personally enjoyed about the different brands. I truly love the luxury of the Hastens Mattress.

Talk about the importance of having a proper mattress. What is its impact during and after sleep?

You need the correct support and comfort to obtain a good night’s sleep. A good mattress will allow you to get into a deep REM sleep so your body can rejuvenate and prepare for the next day. If you toss and turn all night, you never get into the deep sleep that your body needs to get proper rest. You will wake up with backaches and a tired feeling, even after you think you have slept all night.

How long should a mattress be kept? What are the signs it’s time to shop for a new one?

A mattress should last between eight to 20 years. The best way to tell if you need a new mattress is to ask yourself if you are waking up feeling as good as you did when you first purchased it. If the answer is no, then it’s time to replace your mattress.

Describe the optimal sleeping conditions.

A cool, dark room with no television on. You really need a calm and cool area for optimal sleep.
